ABSTRACT
The entry of the American and Foreign Power Company into Colombia in 1927 marked the beginning of a new stage in the electrical development of the country. Among its many accomplishments, the American utility was responsible for bringing a modern, efficient service to areas that had been lagging behind even by Colombian standards. Furthermore, the American and Foreign Power Company began for the first time in Colombia's history to consider electricity within a national perspective, rather than from the purely local angle followed up to that time. Yet an increase in the pace of electrification was not welcomed by all the elite members in some Colombian cities, as the section in this chapter on Cali reveals.
