ABSTRACT

The domestic group on Caye Caulker is a household which contains a nuclear family: a man and woman living in a conjugal relationship, their own children and any children from previous conjugal relationships. Within the domestic group there is a clear but not a strict division of labor for women, men, and children. Most island activities can be classified according to the appropriate gender and age, but in particular circumstances there is acceptance of a certain amount of crossing over into roles other than the most appropriate. Responsibilities are viewed as complementary, with each person contributing to the functioning of the household as a whole.
