ABSTRACT

Feelings of national identity have expressed themselves in open hostility to the Chinese state and hatred of the Han people. The most obvious examples of this have been in the late 1980s among the Tibetans and in the early 1990s in Xinjiang [but] in most minority areas... outright secession is not on the agenda of the overwhelming majority of minority people. Most would regard it as both impracticable and undesirable.
