ABSTRACT
During unrecorded millennia the muscles of men and animals had supplied the necessary motion for the earliest anonymous machines—the quern, the potter's wheel, the bow drill, the forge bellows, or the hand pump. In time men learned to use the power of fire and water to ease the onerous tasks.
