ABSTRACT

This chapter and the next contain case studies of two of the subject departments at Milltown High School which were most involved with multicultural and anti-racist education. I will describe at some length the sub-cultures of the two departments - the teachers, the context in which they worked, their subject perspectives and views on multiculturalism and anti-racism, and finally some examples of the teaching that I observed. The members of the two departments (especially the English department) spent a considerable amount of time talking to me about their work, informally, and in interviews, and allowed me to observe many of their lessons.
