The principle of interpretation is carried forward by the director and actors in the production phase of the script, and later by the editor in the post-production phase. It is critical to the viability of the fi lm that the various phases be organic, and that further development and maturation of the ideas and intentions of the screenplay take place. When the process works well, it results in a fi lm like The Godfather ; when it doesn’t, there are many participants to whom to apportion the blame.
