The study reported in Part II focuses upon the ways in which households develop default and the ways in which they try to manage, contain, and reverse their debts. Although mortgage arrears were the specific focus, the intention is to understand more about debt in general. The emphasis has been upon a group of questions that have received little attention to date, but which form part of a series of questions about a credit and debt society of the type outlined briefly in chapter 1. The principal aim of this chapter is to return discussion to some of the broader questions concerning the development and impact of credit and default within society.
