Michael Rowlands and Kristian Kristiansen In this volume we bring together a set of papers, some previously published, others written specifically for this collection, which we believe define a coherent argument for the relevance of archaeology to the study of social transformation and our understanding of the contemporary world. Originating under the influence of various debates within structural Marxism in the early 1970s, the consistent theme of this volume is the reevaluation of the premises and epistemologies that should generate a distinctively archaeological approach to the past.
