ABSTRACT
The previous chapter presented a broad overview of protected areas in various environments, with particular reference to the establishment of national parks in countries around the world. This chapter develops a more focused and critical assessment of the management of national parks for nature conservation and outdoor recreation. Competing values, interests and priorities highlight the need for planning procedures that take account of environmental concerns, as well as recreational and tourism use of national parks, in an integrated and sensitive way.
