ABSTRACT
If there is a major lacuna in That Noble Dream,1 it is that Novick’s history misses the turn towards textuality among some American social historians. The fault is not Novick’s, but just unfortunate timing. His book was completed and its publication coincided with the appearance of Joan Scott’s much discussed volume, Gender and the Politics of History.2
