ABSTRACT

Physical activity is a very effective vehicle for learning language as the language is linked to action. Toddlers and young children often keep up a running commentary on what they are doing. The daughter of one of the authors (named Rachel) would continually talk to herself between the ages of 18 months and 4 years. She would say, ‘Careful Eel! (she couldn’t quite manage Rachel in the early days) Don’t fall down’, ‘Jump off the sofa’, ‘Climbing. One hand, two hands. One hand, two hands.’
