ABSTRACT

Fatigue/Relaxation/Sleep/Trance (FRST) is probably the most controversial emotion to be nominated to our list of basic emotions. I defended its choice in chapter 1.

Th is emotion provides rest and renewal aft er the others have depleted us of our energy and attention. Using FRST, we can:

• be desperate to close our eyes and sleep and yet remain awake; • stab our arm with nails and report feeling no pain; • be in an insoluble crisis one day and, aft er a good night’s sleep, solve

the problem the next day; • be awake, our eyes open, staring into space and be somewhere else in

our minds.
