January 10. Perry Como, accompanied by the Ramblers, begins a fi ve-week run atop the pop charts with “Don’t Let the Stars Get in Your Eyes” (RCA Victor 5064).
January 22. Tom Lehrer records his fi rst album, Songs of Tom Lehrer, at Trans Radio studios, Boston for a total of $15. Issued in March on Lehrer Records (TLP-1) in the ten-inch confi guration, it sold an estimated 180,000 by 1957.
