ABSTRACT

Facsimile of the fair copy full score of the symphony with extensive introductory documentation of great value in its own right. The quality of the facsimile is unique. The documentation includes a discussion of the history of the composition of the work, a survey of the extramusical programs, a collection of ninety-two letters from Mahler relating to the work, a brief survey of the critical reaction to the symphony in Mahler’s lifetime, a discussion of all known manuscript sources by Edward Reilly and a carefully chosen bibliography.
