For countless single women the years of feminist literature have not had much impact on the proclivity to be ashamed that they are not in a relationship with a man. Shame shadows some of these women, becoming their constant companions. It goes with them to the movies on lonely Sundays. For some, Sunday is the only day they can allow themselves the public disclosure of going to the movies alone. It counts as less of a pronouncement of defeat than the same solitary trip on a Friday or Saturday night.
