ABSTRACT
To gain an initial understanding of architectural history we should take a short sojourn outside Western Europe and look at ancient civilisations and their cultural influences on architecture. This section of the book is not by any means intended as a definitive analysis of ancient architectural styles and influence, its purpose is merely to offer a sketch of architectural development. This will include Egyptian, Western Asiatic, Greek and Ancient Roman forms in order to demonstrate the various influences of their cultures and how they ultimately affected subsequent cultures.
