ABSTRACT

As reviewed in previous chapters, symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) fall along two major dimensions: hyperactivity/ impulsivity and inattentiveness/disorganization. Because it is common for boys and male teens to exhibit many behaviors that fall into these categories, clinicians need to use techniques that will help them classify the degree of severity of those symptoms. To prevent overdiagnosing, clinicians must use measures that will help them rate the relative degree of impairment in these areas. Standardized assessment tools allow clinicians to determine symptom severity by comparing them to normative data.
