ABSTRACT

In addition to ethics frameworks, universities and other academic institutions have ethics principles, policies and procedures specifi cally for research activity. It is research ethics that is covered in this chapter, which is broadly divided into two parts. The fi rst part covers scientifi c dishonesty, based on the seven sources of scientifi c dishonesty identifi ed by Shore (1991, described by Thomas et al., 2005: 77-85) and considers them specifi cally within performance analysis research. The second part of the chapter is concerned with the principles, policies and procedures for research ethics. Research ethics principles apply to the way research is carried out and reported. Universities and other higher education institutions have a responsibility to ensure that the research they undertake is done legally, safely and responsibly.
