ABSTRACT

This chapter critically assesses the relationships between sports mascots and the media. While sexist team names and Confederate symbols have attracted limited attention (Eitzen & Zinn, 1989, 1993; King & Springwood, 2001a; Vanderford, 1996), the use of (pseudo)Indian imagery in sports has dominated media coverage, scholarly inquiry, and political debates. Consequently, this chapter centers exclusively on Native American mascots in the media.
