ALONG with the crape dresses, mourning parasols and black-edged handkerchiefs,
specially designed mourning jewellery was required. The etiquette of wearing such
jewellery was just as elaborate as that of the clothes themselves. If a shiny, faceted, black
jewel was worn whilst in deepest mourning instead of one with a matt surface it could be
as socially disastrous as coming out of mourning too early.
