ABSTRACT
The Netherlands is one of the smallest European countries, situated in the north west of mainland Europe. It has a temperate/atlantic climate covering 34000 km2. Its most unique feature is its low-lying topography, with very little land over 300m, and a significant proportion being beneath sea level. Consequently, a large part of the nature conservation importance of the Netherlands stems from its wetlands, particularly the coastal wetlands.
