ABSTRACT

This quote is from the novel The Borderliners by Danish author Peter Høeg. The title indicates that we are dealing with a group of people for whom survival is a struggle played out on the margins of society. The novel tells the story of three children and their attempts to survive in the no man’s land inhabited by those who belong nowhere; neither within the school system nor outside it. They are borderliners. Yet in an informed democratic society, everyone deserves a chance, including those who are defined as being on the border. ‘Biehl’s Academy was that chance’ (Høeg 1994).
