ABSTRACT
Evidence can be found in the historical, anthropological, and sociological literature indicating that various cultures at diff erent points in time have recognized more than two genders (Bolin & Wheleban, 1999; Bullough & Bullough, 1993; Coleman, Colgan, & Gooren, 1992; Feinberg, 1996; Garber, 1992; Williams, 1986). Examples of this include the Hijras of India, the Acault of Myanmar, the Mahkee of Th ailand, and the Native American Berdach, or two-spirits. Although this broader form of conceptualizing gender continues to exist in some cultures, it is not prevalent in present-day Western culture.
