ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we argue for the importance of placing the eld of psychology at the center of peace education. Then we advance ve psychologically based propositions that bear on peace education, drawing extensively from concepts, themes, and perspectives that are emerging in peace psychology. We use the term “peace psychology” to refer to a specialty within psychology that is aimed at understanding and promoting cognitions, emotions, and actions that prevent and reduce the incidence and prevalence of violent episodes and mitigate the insidious form of violence called structural violence, which kills people slowly through the deprivation of human need satisfaction (Christie, Wagner, & Winter, 2001).
