THE EARLY PIONEERS

The influence of the Christian missions in the field of education in South East Asia, especially in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, has been enormous and it is generally acknow ledged that the development of modern education in these countries came about as a direct result of missionary influence(2). Yet although the story of missionary involve ment in education largely begins uith the expansion of the colonial pouers and is therefore mainly a nineteenth and tuentieth century phenomenon, it is uorth pointing out that missionary activity in South East Asia began during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
