ABSTRACT
Having conceptualized and operationalized democracy in the previous chapter, this chapter seeks to provide a fair and nuanced depiction of how Sen understands democracy. As previously argued, we will arrive at this understanding using two separate strategies. First, by inferring directly from Sen’s own writings about famine and democracy. Second, by using Sen’s empirical example of India as a democratic point of reference for the political systems encountered in the case-studies.
