ABSTRACT

I N 18-- our amateur circle, which was later recreated into the Moscow Art Theatre, gave several performances in Tula. The rehearsals and all the other preparations for the perform-

ances were held in the hospitable home of N. V. Davidov, who was a close friend of Tolstoy. The life of the entire household was forced to run in the channels made necessary by the needs of our company. Between rehearsals there were noisy dinners, accompanied by practical joking. Even the host himself, who was far from young, became a veritable schoolboy.
