ABSTRACT

It is not anticipated in this account that all learners will reach the stage of transformative learning as it is defined here. The operation of transformative learning appears to be the result of persistent work towards understanding, but there also seem to be times when sudden transformation of understanding can occur. These situations can be the result of a single piece of new learning or a new idea. The learning may be accompanied by strong emotional reactions, such as in spiritual transformation. Although the emotional reaction may be less dramatic, there are moments in normal learning situations when things fall into place, a substantial new view emerges and there is a sense of intellectual excitement.
