ABSTRACT

In 1997, John Honey, former Dean of Teacher Education at De Montfort University, yet again waged war with linguists over the teaching of standard English in schools (The Guardian 9/8/97; The Independent 24/8/97). This recent controversy arose out of the publication of his book Language is POH'el:· The Story (~r Standard English and its Ene/nies, and occurred fourteen years after a similar debate was published in The Guardian (February/March 1983).
