Integrationists clainl that words, syllables and seglnents are constit uted solely as cultural artifacts arising from the fact of literacy~ they are said to be "second-order constructs, belonging not to nature but to culture' (Harris 1997: 270). They also object to the ~fixed code' conception of "linguistic con1munication'. These are interesting claims~ I exan1ine both here.
