ABSTRACT
There is a consensus in Australia that multiculturalism and Australia's attempts to move away from Europe and into Asia are naturally complementary. If multiculturalism is the antithesis of the assimilationist drive to subject all Australians, regardless of their background, to Anglo cultural norms, then surely multiculturalism, by its very nature as an anti-Eurocentric discourse, lays the ground for a redirecting of Australia towards Asia.
