ABSTRACT

Giving students extensive opportunities to engage in the sorts of tasks that develop and demonstrate their learning is a useful principle to bear in mind when trying to design effective Assessment for Learning environments. We can design opportunities for formative activities into the student experience. Effective planning and structuring of our teaching sessions, so that students have ample opportunity to build, rehearse and practise important qualities and skills before they ‘count’, can be particularly helpful here. AfL approaches, then, typically inform the way we teach, as well as the ways in which we assess students.
