ABSTRACT
It was the 1970s. The head of Digital Equipment Corporation’s manufacturing, Peter Kaufman, hired me as an internal consultant to advise and guide the growth of the company’s plants. Kaufman joined DEC, a pioneering American computer company, in 1966, coming from Beckman Instruments. He was known for creating a culture to respond and produce; if engineering could design it, he would manufacture it.
