ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with an ambiguous issue on which knowledgeable observers and scholars disagree. Also, empiric studies are lacking on many of the subjects taken up. These difficulties are reduced by concentrating on those features of Israeli Jewish society (called for the sake of simplicity “Israeli society,” unless otherwise noted) which are of much importance for Israeli statecraft. The views of the minorities are quite different, as will be discussed separately.
