In general the report recommends a patriotism which “ fears God and keeps its powder dry,” a reasonable and balanced patriotism, however, anti-Chauvinist in character, ready to subordinate the interests of

country to the interests of humanity. Pre-war Germany provides the “awful example” of what patriotism ought not to be. The effect of this report on the schools cannot be accurately measured; but the very issuance of such a report by the highly honoured British Association indicates the importance attached by an influential body of public opinion in England to the teaching of patriotism.
