ABSTRACT
This chapter begins by illustrating the application of the content of the preceding chapters to support for understanding. Teaching orientations, a press for understanding and various ways of fostering understanding are described. Throughout, the need for active, mental engagement with what is to be understood is emphasized. Some teachers may not need to abandon their existing strategies but may need to adopt a different orientation in their teaching.
