ABSTRACT
Davidson’s account of truth and predication seems to remove one reason to think metaphysical theories of the world are necessary in addition to scientifi c theories. As we will see in later chapters, his way of thinking about truth and predication also dissolves some other puzzles that have occupied metaphysics. However, the most important intuitive truths that seem to require metaphysical theories are intuitions that there are necessities about medium-sized objects. Necessities about medium-sized objects seem to require a single privileged division of the world into objects and kinds. Such a privileged division raises puzzles about how those necessities fi t with the necessities about the objects of physics.
