What We Ought to Do

The reader will have noticed that the theory of what “good” means in Chapter 9 employs the notion “ought.” This may seem to be small progress in understanding ethical notions, since “ought” is at least as puzzling and controversial as “good.” This chapter will articulate and defend a Davidsonian account of “ought” and its relation to ethics.
