ABSTRACT
Tourism is widely recognised as one of the world’s most signifi cant forms of economic activity. Despite concerns as to the effects of fi nancial crises, climate change and the increasing costs of oil, tourism is forecast to continue to grow in the foreseeable future. In 2012, international tourist arrivals reached one billion for the fi rst time, up from 25 million in 1950, 277 million in 1980 and 528 million in 1995 (United Nations World Tourism Organization [UNWTO] 2012a).
