ABSTRACT

A subject leader in any given school has the role essentially to provide leadership and direction for the subject. The reality within primary schools can be somewhat removed from this position and the importance of the role of a subject leader can vary enormously ranging from a role holder with a budget delivering staff training to a member of staff simply in charge of a cupboard. Physical Education subject leaders have for a long time belonged to the latter group but this position and its connectedness to the wider education community has shifted considerably over the last two decades. This chapter outlines this journey beginning in the mid-1990s.
