However, changes to the role of the Lord Chancellor were enacted by the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.

Before the Constitutional Reform Act 2005, the Lord Chancellor was:

• Head of the Judiciary (this is now the Lord Chief Justice, judicial appointments are now dealt with by the Judicial Appointments Commission)

• A judge in the House of Lords and the High Court (Chancery Division).
