ABSTRACT

This chapter is a discussion of parenting aimed at helping family thera-pists with the difficult job of working with this most elusive and reactive family segment, the parental subgroup. It is not about how to parent. Parent is a role that is deeply connected with personhood and identity. When the role is separated from the person, parental integrity is compromised. This leads to a collapse of fealty. Defiance is stimulated as a way for the child to protect her growth and to induce the parent to connect he role with their person.
