ABSTRACT
Society is possible only when there is sufficient consensus about the most crucial survival values of a given population, although the key values in different cultures exhibit varied constellations of meanings and emphases. The range of possibilities shows that cultures may be focused on traditions, on modernity, on constructive values, on destructive values, on individuals, or on collectivities. Furthermore, the nature of a society depends to a large extent on the characteristics of its dominant culture.
