ABSTRACT

For those teachers who are now entering the profession, appraisal should become a part of their working lives. However the need for training which has underpinned the introduction of appraisal should not go away, it should change its nature. We believe that there will be a need for training, or other forms of development, for the following teachers:

from their current post, including deputy heads and head teachers;

We would also suggest that there should be the opportunity for appraisees to work together on a skills review basis, maybe at the end of a two-year cycle, to ensure that appraisal meets current needs. Each of these groups will have their own training needs, and we will try to address what we see them as being and how they can be met. Later in the chapter we will discuss the types of skills, which it may be useful to work on, for ongoing training.
