ABSTRACT

Throughout this book I have sought to represent as faithfully as possible the young people’s digital practices and understandings based on what they have reported, shared and made during the course of the fieldwork. I am extremely grateful for the generosity of the young people involved, and was constantly impressed by the thoughtfulness with which they constructed their responses to the research provocations. Over the course of the fieldwork we considered a wide range of issues that influence and shape their use of digital media. We have explored the contextual and historical factors and discourses that inform their digital practices, thereby identifying the connections and disconnections that exist across the digital platforms they engage with. Key insights have emerged that shed light not only on their digital literacies, but also on how research might be conducted with young people in ways that are mutually beneficial to both researcher and participant.
