ABSTRACT

Blue Velvet, I argued i n the previous chapter, is a parable of normative male development. In this chapter, 1 want to look at versions of masculinity that lie outside the hegemonic masculine/feminine gender binary but are nonetheless marked by it. Drawing o n the work that I have engaged i n wi th two of my clients, I hope to convey how harmful it can be not to question their and our concepts of masculinity and femininity as rigorously as we question any other certainty presented to us by our clients (see M a y 1986).
