Freudians,nolessthanAdlerians,havepolemicizedaboutAdler'sdeparture fromtheViennaSocietytothepointofuttercaricature.Oneofthemorerecent (andrestrained)Freudianaccountssummarizesthesequenceofeventsfollowing Adler'sassumptionoftheSocietypresidencyin1910inthefollowingterms:
EvaluationoftheSocietyMinutesfrom1906to1909providesnobasis whateverforthiskindofgratuitousreconstruction.Adler'stheoryoforgan inferiorityandhisderivativeegopsychologyhadbeenfullyelaboratedforhis colleagueswellbefore1910.Theviewsthatallegedly"carriedhimaway"from theFreudianschoolin1910,moreover,werethesameviewsthathadenriched theSocietydiscussionsforfiveyearsandelevatedAdlertoapositionofgroup leadershipsecondonlytoFreud'satthebeginningof1911.
