ABSTRACT
How any collection of self-interested agents might be capable of coexistence is one of the central substantive questions for social science paradigms in the positivist ontological mode. As the problem of individualism versus collectivism, it is the one procedural problem they all share. For there to be a problem, one must grant its terms. Agents are free; cooperative undertakings are calculated, and they are difficult. These are the terms of liberalism.
