ABSTRACT
THE TWO EXTREME EXAMPLES of urban concentrations emerging from the Inca civilization are represented by the capital and the simple rural villages where the bulk of the population lived. The capital reflected the Empire's power and wealth; the life of the people was seen in the innumerable small villages scattered wherever environmental conditions offered them a living. Neither represents a good example of the Inca's knowledge of urban planning.
