ABSTRACT
The new buildings which were erected by dwellings companies and the Council are probably the best-known part of Victorian slum clearance. They have been particularly studied by Tarn and Beattie, whose publications contain plans and photographs 1 . It is, however, the architectural aspects of buildings which have attracted most attention, whereas the purpose of this chapter is to link reconstruction and its effects to the nature of the whole clearance programme.
